CMHS Venison 101 Project

Classroom

Thursday November 12th and Friday November 13th Jamie Mullins and Lisa Montgomery presented ‘Venison 101’ to the agricultural and wildlife students at CCMHS. Jamie and Lisa are local extension agents from Calhoun and Gilmer respectively. This is the third year that the venison 101 program has been in operation at our high school.

The first day is an education day where the extension agents present management details about deer in West Virginia. They presented a slideshow to approximately 30 students on Thursday. They reiterate laws and limits for wildlife in WV.  On Friday, Lisa Montgomery brought in a deer for further processing. Lisa’s father, aka Gary the butcher, showed students how to cut and prepare venison retail cuts. Students cut up meat and prepared three recipes made from the deer meat. Students sampled the fare and seemed really impressed with the outcome of the recipes.
